Use Your Skills to Sell Yourself

Use Your Skills to Sell Yourself

A creative portfolio review

by Eran Thomson

J.S. - UX/UI Designer

There’s only one reason to create an online portfolio…

To show off your skills and get work.

The more precise and pointy you can be about who you are and what you do, the more likely it is that someone will hire you to do it.

But if you claim to have skills and you don’t fully demonstrate them, then your folio won’t be working as hard as it should.

Here we have a UX/UI Designer whose site is missing crucial navigation (a work section), doesn’t follow best practices (the logo does not link to the homepage), and most important of all, hardly shows any UX/UI work in the folio section.

This is a huge missed opportunity.

I appreciate that this site appears to be hand-coded (i.e. not WordPress or Squarespace) but you still gotta get the fundamentals right.

The decision to use images for large blocks of text throughout the site goes against most UX/UI best practices. It’s not searchable, not readable on small screens, and loads slower than HTML.

If you want to get hired as a UX/UI Designer then your online folio should have super functional – and ideally super cool UX/UI.

This is your chance to show the world what you can do – without any client constraints.

And right now, I think this folio is selling itself short.
